The Evolution of Humanoid Robots: From Science Fiction to STEM Education

A New Chapter for a Growing Tech Scene

Boise has quietly become a real technology hub over the past several years, drawing companies and families that might once have looked only at the coasts. That growth is exactly the kind of environment where a hands-on robotics program belongs — not as a novelty, but as early preparation for the industry taking root around it.

The Hardware

At iCode Boise, students work directly with the Unitree R1 EDU, a 25-kilogram humanoid robot with up to 40 degrees of freedom, an onboard NVIDIA Jetson Orin AI computer capable of 100 trillion operations per second, and 3D LiDAR with depth cameras for real-time sensing. Every instruction the robot follows is code written by the student, in Python and C++ through ROS 2.

Mapping a Room

One project uses the robot’s LiDAR and depth cameras to build a map of a room as it moves through it — a task that sounds automatic but requires a student to write and adjust the code that interprets the sensor data correctly. Early versions often produce a distorted or incomplete map. A mentor helps the student figure out which part of the data processing is off, rather than just supplying a working version.

Part of what makes this project instructive is that the sensors themselves are working correctly the whole time — the raw data is fine. What usually needs fixing is how the student’s code interprets that data, which is a distinction a lot of students don’t expect. It’s an early, hands-on lesson that a working sensor and a working program are two different things, and both have to be right for the result to make sense.

Who Actually Teaches the Class

It’s a mentor, not the robot. Every session, an instructor teaches the code, the mechanical gears and linkages that turn that code into movement, and the electronics that connect sensors to onboard computing. The robot is what a student studies — not who teaches them.

What the Program Involves

iCode calls this the Youth Innovation Program, also listed as the College Accelerator Program for what it’s designed to deliver. It’s an 8-week, mentor-led cohort of 12 students in three teams of four to five. A student can take the robotics path, or choose web and mobile app development, data analysis, AI and automation, or digital media — robotics simply offers access to hardware most students won’t see again until much later, if ever.

Every cohort ends with a live pitch to iCode Corporate leadership, where students present their finished project and the problem-solving behind it.

A city growing as fast as Boise needs a steady supply of people who already know how to work with the technology its new employers rely on, not just people willing to be trained from scratch. That’s a real, practical reason this program matters here beyond any single student’s college application. Every cohort that finishes is a small group of teenagers who’ve already spent eight weeks doing the kind of hands-on, self-directed problem-solving this city’s fastest-growing employers are actively looking for.

No prior experience with robotics or programming is required to apply. The first stretch of the program focuses on fundamentals, so every student, regardless of background, arrives at the harder project work with the same footing.

The eight weeks follow a clear rhythm: the first two are spent on fundamentals, getting every student comfortable with the code and the hardware regardless of where they started. The middle weeks are for building and repeatedly testing the actual project, which is where most of the debugging and problem-solving happens. The final stretch is for refining the work and preparing the presentation that goes in front of iCode Corporate leadership.
