Begin Your Coding Journey in iCode’s Lego Robotics Summer Camp

Since opening three years ago, iCode Bellevue has introduced hundreds of students to STEM education. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can all benefit students today and lead them to success in the future. For students eager to start their STEM and coding journey, our Lego EV3 Battle of the Bots Camp is the perfect introduction.

This camp is made for students ages 6-11 and introduces students to a variety of STEM concepts in a competition format. As a part of this class, students will learn coding, robotics, and vital soft skills to help them continue their learning journey.

Explore Engineering

In this camp, iCode instructors introduce students to coding and robotics in a hands-on environment. When students arrive, they will learn about robotics competitions such as the First Lego League and the DARPA Grand Challenge. Like the competitors in these competitions, campers will consider different strategies and make plans to win a class-wide robotics competition.

Participants designed and built their battle bots after guided instruction on engineering concepts and Lego EV3s. Working in groups of two, students begin building the first version of their bots.

Students must work together to outfit their bot with attachments and codable sensors. This collaborative aspect fosters teamwork and allows exploring different approaches to gain a competitive edge. Groups can create a large grappling arm or use an infrared sensor for enhanced navigation. No matter what campers decide, everyone is encouraged to use their creativity and build their engineering knowledge.

Building a Strong Foundation in Coding

Instructor introducing Lego EV3 Robotics CompetitionAfter the campers build their battle bots, the class transitions to coding their creations. The Lego EV3 robotics platform uses an approachable block-based language, similar to Scratch, for programming. This block-based platform serves as a springboard, enabling learners to grasp fundamental coding principles.

Through instructor-led tutorials and hands-on exercises, students delve into the intricacies of programming logic. From understanding the importance of loops in repetitive tasks to using variables to store and manipulate data, participants gain invaluable insights into the building blocks of coding.

Once students learn the fundamentals, they can begin creating a strategy. Using the tools given in the Lego EV3 classroom app, campers can code their robot to respond to different situations in the upcoming battles. Instructors will teach the class a few guided examples, such as having their robot reverse direction after hitting a wall. However, students are encouraged to explore additional features to give themselves a competitive edge.

Thrilling Robotics Competitions

Participants prepare to test their creations in a friendly class-wide competition as the camp progresses. Students will compete and make adjustments to their battle bot, their code, and their overall strategy. Students will have multiple rounds to battle the rest of the class before introducing new competitions.

iCode’s hands-on approach fosters technical skills in coding and engineering and vital soft skills such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. Each round of competition presents new challenges and opportunities for students to apply what they’ve learned, ensuring they leave the camp with a well-rounded STEM experience and are prepared for future robotics and coding challenges.

Lego EV3 Battle Bots Itinerary

iCode Bellevue structures its curriculum to balance guided lessons with engaging activities. After several hours of coursework, the class will have a 15-minute break before the students return ready to learn.

While the robotics kits, computers, and other class materials are provided, iCode Bellevue asks its families to bring lunch to each student.

Additionally, iCode Bellevue is a nut-free facility, so participants should be mindful of the foods they bring to create a safe environment for everyone.

This camp is open to students ages 6-11. No prerequisite skills are required, and newcomers to STEM education are encouraged to start here.

Currently, there is availability for this camp for the following dates:

  • 3-Day Week of June 19th – 21st
  • 3-Day Week of July 1st – 3rd
  • Week of July 15th – 19th
  • Week of July 29th – August 2nd
  • Week of August 12th – August 16th

Whether your child is passionate about robotics or interested in coding, this camp promises an unforgettable experience. Spots are limited, so we encourage interested parents to enroll early to secure their place.
