Why we love it πŸ’› Chess is the ultimate game of strategy, and there is no better place to learn than with your local community! The Robbinsville branch of the Mercer County Library System is hosting a fantastic, inclusive Chess Club where kids can learn the absolute basics or test their advanced skills against new opponents. We absolutely love chess because it teaches kids how to think critically, anticipate problems before they happen, and practice immense focus in a highly social, screen-free environment!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton πŸŒˆβš™οΈ You might be surprised to learn that a great chess player uses the exact same part of their brain as a great computer scientist!

  • Algorithms & β€œIf/Then” Logic: In chess, a player has to think several moves ahead: “If I move my knight here, then they will move their bishop there.” This is the exact definition of an algorithm! In our Python and Java Belts, kids learn how to write these precise “If/Then” logic statements to build complex software and games.

  • Artificial Intelligence: How did computers eventually learn to beat human chess champions? Through machine learning! As students advance through our high school tracks, they learn the foundational concepts of AIβ€”teaching computers how to recognize patterns, analyze massive amounts of data, and make strategic decisions.

  • Focus & Resilience: Losing a chess match is just a stepping stone to winning the next one. In our coding labs, we teach that same resilience. When a student’s code has a bug, we show them how to analyze the problem, adapt their strategy, and try again without getting frustrated!

Join the fun, then keep the momentum going at iCode πŸŽ’πŸš€ Start by mastering the chessboard at the library, then bring that world-class strategic thinking to iCode Princeton where we turn big ideas into real-world tech skills!
