Why we love it πŸ’› True engineering isn’t about having the strongest materials; it’s about knowing how to use what you have! The Mercer County Library Hopewell Branch is hosting a fantastic, hands-on “STEAM Explorers Workshop” led by a local teen Girl Scout. Kids will be challenged to learn about structures by building buildings entirely out of paper. We absolutely love constraint-based maker challenges because a flat piece of paper is flimsy, but once a child learns how to fold it into a cylinder or a triangle, it can suddenly support massive amounts of weight!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton πŸŒˆβš™οΈ Folding paper to support more weight is the physical equivalent of Load Balancing and Code Optimization!

  • Load Balancing: If you put a heavy book on a flat piece of paper, it crushes immediately. But if you fold the paper into pillars, the weight is distributed! In computer science, this is called “Load Balancing.” In our Web Development and Python Tracks, we teach older students how servers handle massive amounts of internet traffic. They learn how software distributes data (the “weight”) evenly across multiple servers so websites don’t crash when millions of people log on.

  • Constraint-Based Optimization: Building a tall tower using only paper teaches kids how to optimize limited resources. We teach this exact agile mindset! Our students learn that computers have limited memory and processing power. We train them to write highly efficient, optimized code that does exactly what it needs to do without wasting the computer’s battery or slowing down the game.

Join the fun, then keep the momentum going at iCode πŸŽ’πŸš€ Balance the load at the library, then bring that world-class logic to iCode Princeton where we teach you how to build the software!
