Who it’s for: Kids & Teens

Why we love it 💛 Gotta catch ’em all! The Ewing Branch of the Mercer County Library System is calling all Pokémon trainers for a dedicated afternoon of gaming, strategy, and socializing. Kids and teens will learn how to play the official Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) through fun, guided activities while discussing the books, games, and massive universe of all things Pokémon. We absolutely love trading card game events because they take kids away from the screens and teach them high-level strategy, math, and social interaction in a fun, shared-interest environment!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton 🌈⚙️ Playing a strategic trading card game requires the exact same logical thinking used to program a digital video game!

  • Tracking Variables & Hit Points: In Pokémon, players have to track their creature’s “HP” (Hit Points) and calculate exactly how much damage an attack does based on weaknesses and resistances. In our Python and Game Design Tracks, we teach kids how to write the exact code needed to track these changing “Variables” in a digital space, creating their own health bars and attack functions!

  • Game Mechanics & Balancing: Why is one card stronger than another? It’s all about “Game Mechanics” and balancing! At iCode, we teach our students that understanding the rules of a game is the first step to creating one. By analyzing the balanced rule set of the Pokémon TCG, kids learn the foundational user-experience (UX) skills needed to design, program, and balance their own original video games.

Join the fun, then keep the momentum going at iCode 🎒🚀 Master the cards at the library, then bring that world-class strategy to iCode Princeton where we turn analog game mechanics into lifelong digital tech skills!
