Who it’s for: Kids and Tweens (Grades 2–6; beginners and experienced players welcome!)

Why we love it 💛 Chess is the ultimate logic puzzle! The Princeton Public Library hosts an awesome, inclusive weekend Chess Session led by volunteers from Impact Chess, a local youth nonprofit. Kids in elementary and middle school can drop in to learn the basics, practice their opening moves, or challenge their peers to a match. We absolutely love chess because it teaches kids how to think critically, anticipate problems before they happen, and practice immense focus in a highly social, screen-free environment.

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton 🌈⚙️ Teaching a computer how to play chess was one of the very first milestones in Artificial Intelligence!

• Algorithms & “If/Then” Logic: In chess, a player has to think several moves ahead: “If I move my knight here, then they will move their bishop there.” This is the exact definition of an algorithm! In our Python and Java Belts, kids learn how to write these precise “If/Then” logic statements to build complex software and games.

• Artificial Intelligence: The strategies your child uses to win a chess game are the exact same strategies used to train Machine Learning models! As our students advance, we teach them how computers process massive amounts of data to make “intelligent” decisions—just like a grandmaster analyzing a chessboard!
