Why we love it πŸ’› Science has never tasted so good! The West Windsor Library is hosting a brilliant program dedicated to introducing the beauty of STEM through everyday life and global culture. This session focuses on the science of phase changes (how solids turn to liquids and back again!) by creating delicious chocolate-covered fruit! Kids will get to decorate their own dessert while learning about the molecular chemistry that makes melting and freezing possible. We absolutely love this event because it proves that complex science isn’t just something that happens in a labβ€”it happens right in our kitchens!

  • Phase Changes & Variables: In chemistry, heating a solid changes its state into a liquid. In computer science, we use code to track these exact same types of changing states! We call these “Variables.” In our Python and Game Design Tracks, we teach older kids how to write code that tracks when a character’s “state” changesβ€”like turning water into ice in a 3D landscape or changing a player’s health bar after taking damage.

  • Algorithmic Sequencing: If you dip the fruit before the chocolate is melted, the recipe fails! A recipe is just a biological algorithm. We use this exact same logic to teach kids that the order of the steps (Syntax) is what makes a computer program run successfully without errors.
