Who it’s for: Kids & Tweens in Grades K–5

Why we love it πŸ’› There is no better way to learn about physics than by building a roller coaster! The Watchung Branch is hosting an incredible afternoon STEAM challenge where elementary students will break into teams and use uniform, wooden KEVA planks to engineer complex roller coaster tracks. We absolutely love collaborative building events that use simple, identical materials (like KEVA planks) because it forces kids to rely entirely on structural balance, gravity, and kinetic energy to make their design work, rather than relying on snapping or gluing pieces together!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton πŸŒˆβš™οΈ Understanding gravity and kinetic energy is critical for both hardware engineering and digital game design!

  • Structural Engineering: Building a roller coaster out of loose planks requires an incredible understanding of load-bearing architecture. At iCode, we teach our VEX Robotics students these exact mechanical concepts, ensuring they can engineer hardware chassis that are stable, balanced, and capable of withstanding fast movement without falling apart.

  • In-Game Physics: If you want to build a fun video game, your digital world has to follow the rules of physics! In our Game Design and Roblox Tracks, our students learn how to code “gravity” and “momentum” into their games, ensuring their digital roller coasters, cars, and characters accelerate and fall in a way that feels incredibly realistic to the player!

Join the fun, then keep the momentum going at iCode πŸŽ’πŸš€ Build the ultimate coaster at the library, then bring that world-class curiosity to iCode Princeton where we turn physical engineering into lifelong tech innovation!
