Why we love it π Sometimes the best way to understand gaming is to completely unplug! The SCLSNJ Montgomery Branch is opening its doors for a massive, multi-hour Family Game Night. Kids and parents can drop in to explore a wide variety of tabletop and board games. We absolutely love unplugged gaming events because they strip away the flashing screens and force kids to look at the raw rules, mechanics, and strategies that make a game fun to play!

Game Logic & Conditionals: In a board game, the rules dictate what happens next: “If you roll a six, then move forward.” In programming, this is called an “If/Then Conditional”! We teach our students in the Game Design Track how to take the rules of their favorite unplugged games and translate them into digital code.

Balancing Mechanics: If a board game is too hard, nobody wants to play it. If itβs too easy, it gets boring fast! Playing physical games teaches kids the critical concept of “Game Balancing.” When our students build their own games in Roblox or Unreal Engine, they must use this exact same logic to balance their digital mechanics so the player stays engaged.
