Why we love it π
Every amazing video game character starts out as a digital lump of clay! The Mercer County Library Lawrence Branch is hosting “Play with Clay,” an open-ended, tactile crafting session where young makers can mold, shape, and design anything their imagination comes up with using air-dry clay. We absolutely love clay sculpting events because they are the earliest form of 3D spatial reasoning. Before a child can navigate the complex X, Y, and Z axes on a computer screen, they need to know how to manipulate mass and volume in their own hands!

3D Digital Modeling: If you can shape it in real life, you can sculpt it on a screen! In our Game Design and Digital Arts Tracks, we teach kids how to use professional 3D modeling software. They learn how to digitally stretch, carve, and mold virtual clay, turning flat shapes into fully 3D objects, characters, and buildings that they can actually use in platforms like Roblox.

Rapid Prototyping: If a clay tower starts to lean, you just squish it down and start over. In the tech industry, this is called “Rapid Prototyping”! We teach our students that the first version of their code or game will never be perfect. Through iterative design, they learn how to quickly test, fail, and improve their software projects without fear of making mistakes.
