Why we love it π Did you know that math is hiding in the ocean? The Lawrence Headquarters Branch is hosting a wonderful “Spring into Spring” craft morning where young kids will paint and adorn small seashell ornaments. We absolutely love natural crafts like this because seashells are a perfect introduction to geometric patterns, symmetry, and the famous “Fibonacci sequence”βshowing young kids that math and science exist in the beautiful, natural world around them!

Visual Patterns: When a child examines the spiral of a seashell, they are seeing a repeating mathematical pattern. In our STEAM Junior Program, we teach kids how to recognize these exact same types of patterns, using them to write their very first visual blocks of digital code!

Fine Motor Skills: Painting a tiny shell requires intense focus and fine motor control. Before a child can type on a keyboard or build a motorized robot, they need this exact hand-eye coordination! We use tactile puzzles and physical building blocks to strengthen these exact same skills before moving to the screen.
