Why we love it π Digital art starts with physical materials! The Raritan Public Library is hosting a fantastic, hands-on craft session where kids are invited to unleash their inner creature creator. Participants will get to paint, decorate, and dream up the silliest, scariest, or downright goofiest monsters using physical rocks as their canvas to take home. We absolutely love messy, tactile art events like this because they encourage kids to look at an uneven, 3D object and figure out how to creatively map a face or pattern onto its surface!

3D Texturing & Mapping: When you paint eyes and teeth onto a bumpy rock, you are navigating 3D space. In game design, this is called “Texturing”! In our Digital Arts and Game Design Tracks, we teach kids how to take 2D digital art (textures) and seamlessly wrap them around 3D polygons to create realistic objects and characters.

The Maker Mindset: Turning a piece of nature into a personalized monster requires imagination and a strong Maker Mindset. We teach our youngest students in the STEAM Junior Track how to take that exact same creative energy and apply it to tech, using tablets and block-code to animate their own digital characters!
