Why we love it ๐ Chess is more than just a game of strategy; it is an incredible masterclass in spatial reasoning! The Mercer County Library Robbinsville Branch is hosting an inclusive, welcoming “Chess Club” where kids of all experience levels can learn the rules and play against their peers. We absolutely love physical chess events because before a child can outsmart their opponent, they have to learn how to navigate an 8×8 grid, calculating precise physical movements across a highly structured playing field!

Coordinate Geometry (X & Y Axes): Every square on a chessboard has a specific, alphanumeric coordinate (like E4 or A1). In our Game Design and Scratch Tracks, we teach kids how to apply this exact logic digitally! They learn how to use the X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) axes to precisely place characters, program movements, and build perfectly aligned 2D levels in their custom video games.

2D Arrays & Data Structures: If a software engineer wants to program a digital chess game, how do they build the board? They use a “2D Array”! In our advanced Python and Computer Science Tracks, we teach older students how to code these data grids. Kids learn how computers store, read, and traverse 2D arrays to instantly track exactly where digital objects are located in a virtual space.
