Science is all about getting a little messy to see what happens! The Mercer County Library West Windsor Branch is hosting an awesome “Big STEAMers” session focused entirely on fizzing, foaming, and crystallizing chemical reactions. We absolutely love hands-on chemistry events like this because they allow kids to physically mix different elements and immediately observe the exciting, unpredictable physical transformations that follow!

Mixing chemicals to create a foaming reaction is the real-world version of Procedural Generation!

Procedural Generation: When kids mix reactive ingredients together, they don’t know exactly how the foam will shape itself. In computer science, developers use a concept called “Procedural Generation” to create similarly unpredictable results! In our Minecraft and Game Design Tracks, we teach older students how algorithms generate random landscapes, crystal caves, and foaming digital lava so no two game environments ever look exactly the same.

Variables & Chemistry: Changing the amount of an ingredient changes the entire chemical reaction. In software programming, these ingredients are called “Variables.” We teach our students how to tweak specific variables in their code to change the size, speed, and color of their digital particle effects, giving them full control over their own digital chemistry!
