Why we love it πŸ’› Building with LEGO bricks is always fun, but it’s even better when you add a little imagination and storytelling! The Mercer County Library Lawrence Branch is hosting an adorable “Adopt a Lego Pet” session where kids can piece together their very own miniature LEGO animal. Once the pet is built, kids get to name it and design a custom physical home for it to live in. We absolutely love this event because it blends hands-on engineering with creative world-building!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton πŸŒˆβš™οΈ Building a pet and assigning it a name is the physical equivalent of Object-Oriented Programming!

  • Object-Oriented Programming (OOP): In software development, when we code a character, we create an “Object.” That object gets specific propertiesβ€”like a name, a color, and a size! When kids build a LEGO pet and give it a name, they are essentially doing physical OOP. In our Python and Scratch Tracks, we teach students how to code digital “pets” and characters, assigning them unique data properties that the computer remembers.

  • Environment & Level Design: A pet needs a place to live! When kids build a physical home out of LEGOs, they are practicing spatial design. We teach this exact concept digitally in our Minecraft, Roblox, and Game Design Tracks. Students learn how to build immersive 3D environments, coding custom biomes, houses, and landscapes for their digital characters to explore.

Join the fun, then keep the momentum going at iCode πŸŽ’πŸš€ Build your pet at the library, then bring that world-class creativity to iCode Princeton where we teach you how to code its digital world!
