Why we love it π The greatest supercomputers in human history were originally built just to play chess! The Mercer County Library Ewing Branch is hosting a fantastic “Chess Hour” sponsored by the Friends of the Ewing Branch Library. We absolutely love chess because it is a game of zero luck and pure strategy. Whether you are a grandmaster or just learning how the pieces move, chess forces your brain to calculate multiple steps ahead, map out potential scenarios, and make decisions based on strict conditional rules!

Predictive Coding (Decision Trees): A great chess player doesn’t just look at the board as it is right now; they look 3 to 4 moves into the future. They calculate: “If I move my knight here, what will my opponent do?” In our Python and Core Computer Science Tracks, we teach students this exact predictive logic! Kids learn how to build “Decision Trees” and algorithms that anticipate user inputs, ensuring their software can intelligently respond to different scenarios.

Conditional Rule Engines: Every piece on a chess board operates on a strict set of rulesβrooks move in straight lines, bishops move on diagonals, and knights move in an L-shape. This is exactly how software works! In our Scratch and Game Design Tracks, we teach younger students how to program “Conditional Statements” (If/Then logic). They learn how to write the code that dictates exactly how a character can move, what obstacles it can cross, and what boundaries it must follow.
