Why we love it π Spring is officially here, and what better way to celebrate than with a great book and a sweet treat! The Hickory Corner branch of the Mercer County Library System is hosting a fantastic morning event for toddlers and preschoolers. Kids will get to practice active listening during a fun story about bunnies, and then they will roll up their sleeves to decorate a sugar cookie to look just like one! We absolutely love community events like this because they pair early literacy with a hands-on, tactile activity that helps young children develop their fine motor skills.
How this event aligns with iCode Princeton πβοΈ The way a child learns the order of a story and figures out the steps to decorate a cookie is the exact same foundational logic they will use to write their first computer program!

Sequencing & Algorithms: When a child learns that a story has a specific order (beginning, middle, and end) or that you have to put icing on a cookie before the sprinkles, they are learning the foundation of an “algorithm.” In our STEAM Junior Program, we use physical coding blocks to teach kids how to stack commands in a specific sequence to achieve a goal.

Tactile Engineering: Decorating a cookie requires patience, spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination. We foster that exact same environment of tactile learning in our early tech labs, using tools like Snap Circuits and introductory robotics to let kids experiment, explore, and build with their own two hands!
