Who itβs for: Kids in 3rd through 5th Grade
Why we love it π Science is all about mixing things up to see what happens! The Princeton Public Library is hosting an incredible “Chemistry Saturdays” workshop inside the cutting-edge Myra & Van Williams Spark Lab. Presented in partnership with the Princeton University Department of Chemistry, kids will learn the basics of chemistry through fun, hands-on experiments supervised by real graduate students. We absolutely love chemistry events because they provide a highly visual, tactile introduction to cause and effect, teaching kids how specific ingredients react when combined!
How this event aligns with iCode Princeton πβοΈ Following a chemical formula is the exact real-world application of Algorithmic Recipes and State Management!
-
Algorithmic Recipes (Sequencing): In chemistry, if you add the ingredients in the wrong order, the experiment fails. In computer programming, we call this “Sequencing”! In our Python and Scratch Tracks, we teach kids how to write the perfect algorithmic recipe. They learn that code must be executed in a strict, logical order for the software to run successfully.
-
State Management (Data Variables): When a liquid turns into a gas, it has undergone a “state change.” In our Game Design Tracks, we teach students how to program this exact logic digitally! They learn how to use “Variables” to track and manage the state of digital objectsβwriting code that changes a character’s state from “standing” to “jumping,” or triggering a reaction in the environment when a player completes a level.
Join the fun, then keep the momentum going at iCode ππ Experiment with chemical reactions at the library, then bring that world-class logic to iCode Princeton where we teach you how to code the digital reactions!
