Who it’s for: Tweens & Teens in Grades 5–12

Why we love it 💛 Knitting and crocheting are the ultimate intersection of math, art, and focus! The SCLSNJ Hillsborough Branch is hosting an awesome drop-in club where local tweens and teens can bring their yarn projects, hang out, and create together. We absolutely love textile arts events for older kids because they require incredible patience, fine motor skills, and spatial awareness to turn a single thread of yarn into a complex, 3D object!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton 🌈⚙️ Textile arts are literally the oldest form of coding in the world!

• Algorithmic Patterns: A knitting pattern is just a written algorithm! It tells the creator exactly which steps to execute in a specific sequence. If you drop a stitch, there is an error in the “code.” At iCode, we teach our students this exact same sequential logic, showing them how to read, follow, and eventually write their own complex algorithms to build functioning software.

• The “Loop” Command: In crocheting, you repeat the same stitch over and over to build a row. In computer science, we call this a “Loop”! Whether they are programming in Block-coding, Python, or Java, our students use “For Loops” and “While Loops” to tell a computer to repeat a specific action efficiently, perfectly mirroring the repetitive, structural math of textile arts!
