Who it’s for: Kids in Grades 2–6 (Beginners or those with some experience)

Why we love it 💛 Every great programmer needs to know how to think a few steps ahead! The Princeton Public Library is hosting a fantastic Drop-In Chess Session led by volunteers from Impact Chess, a local nonprofit dedicated to bringing the game to our community’s youth. Kids in elementary and early middle school can drop into the Story Room to learn the rules, practice their skills, and play matches against their peers. We absolutely love chess because it is the ultimate unplugged puzzle—teaching patience, strategic planning, and critical problem-solving in a highly engaging environment!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton 🌈⚙️ The strategic thinking used to win a game of chess is the exact same logic we use to program software!

• Conditional Logic (If/Then): In chess, you constantly ask yourself: “If I move my knight here, then what will my opponent do?” In our STEAM Junior and Python tracks, we teach kids how to write these exact same “If/Then” statements to help computers make decisions and react to different scenarios in a video game!

• Algorithmic Sequencing: Winning at chess requires planning three or four moves ahead in a specific sequence. At iCode, we teach students that writing code is just mapping out a strategic sequence. Our students learn how to structure their code step-by-step so their digital projects execute flawlessly without any errors.
