Who it’s for: Kids in Grades 4–6

Why we love it πŸ’› You can’t actually see a black hole with a telescopeβ€”you have to understand the math around it! The Princeton Public Library is hosting a fascinating “Astronomy Academy” session inside their Spark Lab. Led by a Princeton University astrophysics graduate student, elementary and middle schoolers will learn about stellar collapse, gravitational lensing, and the bending of light. We absolutely love this event because it uses hands-on demonstrations and visual animations to help kids comprehend phenomena that are completely invisible to the naked eye!

How this event aligns with iCode Princeton πŸŒˆβš™οΈ Visualizing a black hole relies on the exact same logic as Computational Data Modeling!

  • Data Visualization: Since scientists can’t directly photograph a black hole, they use massive amounts of data to render what it should look like. In our Python and Data Science Tracks, we teach older students how to take large, complex sets of raw data and write code to visualize them into charts, graphs, and digital models. * Computational Modeling: The “fabric of spacetime” demonstration at the library is a physical model of a mathematical concept. We teach our students how to build digital models! In our Computer Science Tracks, kids learn how to use algorithms to simulate real-world phenomenaβ€”whether that is predicting weather patterns or modeling the gravitational pull of a planet.

Join the fun, then keep the momentum going at iCode πŸŽ’πŸš€ Explore the cosmos at the library, then bring that world-class curiosity to iCode Princeton where we teach you how to code the models!
