Why Kids Keep Coming Back to Gray Belt 🎮

From Minecraft and Roblox Players to Creators at iCode Ravenswood in Chicago

Ask a Gray Belt student what first sparked their interest in coding, and you’ll often hear one of two answers: Minecraft or Roblox.

At iCode Ravenswood, our after-school STEM education center in Chicago, we see that enthusiasm as an opportunity. Rather than asking kids to put aside the games they love, we use those familiar digital worlds to introduce them to programming, game development, creative problem-solving, and technology.

The result is Gray Belt, one of our most popular after-school STEM programs, where students discover that creating a game can be even more exciting than playing one.

What Is iCode’s Gray Belt Program?

Gray Belt is a structured, hands-on coding and game development program at iCode Ravenswood in Chicago, designed to help children progress from playing Minecraft and Roblox to understanding how digital games and experiences are built.

Through Minecraft Education and Roblox Studio, students explore programming, 3D world-building, game mechanics, and digital design. They begin with visual block-based coding and progressively develop text-based programming skills using Python and Lua.

Our Gray Belt curriculum is organized into nine learning sprints, with each introducing new concepts and projects that build on what students have already learned.

The goal is to help children become confident creators who understand the technology behind the games they enjoy.

From Playing Games to Building Them

There’s a moment we love seeing in our Gray Belt classrooms.

A student who once asked, “How do I beat this level?” begins asking, “How could I build this myself?”

That shift from player to creator is what makes Gray Belt so rewarding.

Instead of simply exploring someone else’s Minecraft world, students learn how programming can change the environment around them. Instead of only playing Roblox games, they begin designing their own experiences using Roblox Studio.

Students might experiment with creating obstacles, programming character interactions, designing landscapes, or troubleshooting a feature that doesn’t work as expected.

Every project introduces an opportunity to think differently about technology. Games become something students can investigate, understand, and eventually create themselves.

What Do Kids Learn in Gray Belt?

Our Gray Belt after-school STEM curriculum introduces students to several foundational technology skills:

  • Minecraft Education: Explore coding concepts through interactive challenges, programming, and digital environments.
  • Roblox Studio: Design virtual worlds, develop game mechanics, and learn how digital experiences are created.
  • Python Programming: Progress from visual coding to text-based programming while developing computational thinking skills.
  • Lua Programming: Use a real programming language to create interactive features and game behaviors in Roblox.
  • 3D Design and World-Building: Experiment with terrain, environments, and digital design.
  • Digital Citizenship: Explore responsible technology use, online behavior, and the ethics of digital creation.

Each lesson combines guided instruction with hands-on projects, giving students opportunities to apply what they’ve learned.

Why After-School STEM Education Matters

Learning to code is valuable, but some of the most important lessons happen when the code doesn’t work.

A student designs a game feature, tests it, and discovers something is wrong. They turn to problem solving to figure out their next step.

Do they need to change a command? Rethink the sequence? Ask a classmate for feedback or try a different approach?

These moments help students develop skills that extend beyond the computer screen.

Problem-solving: Students learn to break complicated challenges into smaller, manageable steps.

Creativity: Game development encourages students to imagine possibilities and bring their ideas to life.

Perseverance: Debugging teaches students that mistakes are a natural part of learning and improvement.

Collaboration: Students practice sharing ideas, communicating clearly, and learning alongside their peers.

Confidence: Completing a project gives children tangible evidence of what they can accomplish through effort and practice.

These are skills that sharpen their critical thinking skills.  These new ways of approaching tricky situations support students throughout school, college, and eventually their careers, regardless of whether they pursue technology professionally.

Why Kids Keep Coming Back to Gray Belt

One of the biggest challenges in after-school education is keeping children engaged long enough to develop meaningful skills.

Gray Belt starts with something students already care about.

Minecraft and Roblox are familiar, exciting, and full of possibilities. But at iCode Ravenswood, those games become the starting point for a deeper learning experience.

Through Gray Belt,  students learn how programming works, experimenting with their own ideas, and working toward increasingly sophisticated projects.

And because the curriculum progresses through structured learning sprints, there’s always something new to discover.

A child who begins by experimenting with block coding may eventually find themselves writing Python commands, designing a Roblox environment, or troubleshooting their own game.

That sense of progress can be incredibly motivating.
