This is the club where the A in STEAM does real work. Students design digitally and then print physically, which introduces a set of constraints no screen ever imposes: overhangs, tolerances, wall thickness, and the fact that gravity exists.
The moment a student picks up the first part they designed and finds it does not quite fit is worth a term of instruction on its own.
Tracks
Students enter at the level that matches their experience and move up as they are ready.
- Introduction — digital design fundamentals, color, composition

- Digital design and visual composition
- 3D modeling and computer-aided design
- Designing for manufacture — what a printer can and cannot actually do
- Prototyping: measure, print, discover it is wrong, revise
A brief, as students receive it
Design a part that clips onto something you already own and holds it steady. It has to print without supports, and it has to fit first time or you have to explain why it did not.
We give the requirements, not the steps. Working out how is the lesson — and the reason students can explain what they built when they get home.
The question parents actually ask
“Is this an art class or a technology class?”
Both, and the printer is what forces the question. A design can be beautiful and still fail because a wall is half a millimetre too thin. Students learn that constraints are not the enemy of a good idea — they are the reason a good idea has to get better.
Where it leads
Digital Arts pairs unusually well with Robotics — students who can design and print custom parts have a real advantage on a competition team.
Questions
Do students keep what they print?
Yes. Every student goes home with the objects they designed, which is usually the moment a skeptical parent comes round.
Is there a materials fee?
No. Filament and materials are included in the term price.
When does the term run?
The Fall 2026 Term runs Sep 28, 2026 to Dec 7, 2026 — 10 sessions, one hour a week, at 73 Central Street, Wellesley.
What does it cost?
$395 for the ten-week term. A second club in the same term is $325. Materials are included.
How is a club different from the Belt Program?
A club is one hour a week for ten weeks, in a larger group, focused on one topic. The Belt Program is two hours a week across a ten-month year, in a group of about six, with a written progress report every month and a capstone project. Plenty of students do both.
What if we need to miss a week?
Tell us in advance and we will place your child in another group that week where the schedule allows. Vacation weeks are already excluded from the term dates above.
