Our widest club by age, running from six-year-olds snapping LEGO mechanisms together to teenagers writing autonomous routines for VEX V5.
The appeal of robotics as a teaching subject is that it is honest. Code that is nearly right produces a robot that nearly works, in front of everybody, and there is no arguing with it. Students learn to test, observe and adjust because the machine gives them no other option.
Tracks
Students enter at the level that matches their experience and move up as they are ready.
- LEGO — building, mechanisms, first sequences (ages 6–9)
- VEX IQ — sensors, loops, conditions, robots that respond to the world

What students actually learn
- Mechanical design — gearing, structure, and why things break where they do
- Sensors and how a machine perceives anything at all
- Autonomous code and driver control
- Teamwork under a deadline, which is most of what a competition season teaches
- Iterative design: build, test, fail, change one thing, test again
A brief, as students receive it
Your robot has to find a wall, follow it, and stop when the wall ends. It cannot touch the wall. You may not hard-code the distances.
We give the requirements, not the steps. Working out how is the lesson — and the reason students can explain what they built when they get home.
The question parents actually ask
“My child has never built anything. Will they be lost?”
No. The LEGO track exists precisely for students who have never held a gear, and the age span is why we run four tracks rather than one room. Placement happens after a free evaluation, not from a form.
Where it leads
Robotics is the most direct route to our competition teams — FIRST LEGO League, VEX IQ and VEX V5, with a real season, a capped roster and tournaments. Tryouts are in September.
Questions
Do we buy a robot kit?
No. All kits, controllers and field elements are provided. Competition-team families sometimes choose to buy a practice kit for home, but that is optional and comes later.
How is this different from the competition teams?
The club is one hour a week for ten weeks and anyone can join. Competition teams are a capped roster, a full season and a much larger commitment. The club is where most team members start.
When does the term run?
The Fall 2026 Term runs Sep 28, 2026 to Dec 7, 2026 — 10 sessions, one hour a week, at 73 Central Street, Wellesley.
What does it cost?
$395 for the ten-week term. A second club in the same term is $325. Materials are included.
How is a club different from the Belt Program?
A club is one hour a week for ten weeks, in a larger group, focused on one topic. The Belt Program is two hours a week across a ten-month year, in a group of about six, with a written progress report every month and a capstone project. Plenty of students do both.
What if we need to miss a week?
Tell us in advance and we will place your child in another group that week where the schedule allows. Vacation weeks are already excluded from the term dates above.
