Minecraft is the club parents are most skeptical about, and the one that most reliably changes their mind. Redstone is a genuine logic system: gates, delays, latches and clocks. A student who builds a working automatic door has built a circuit, whether or not anyone used that word.
Beyond Redstone, students work on collaborative builds with constraints, which turns out to be excellent practice for the parts of engineering that involve other people.
Tracks
Students enter at the level that matches their experience and move up as they are ready.
- Creative — building, structure, planning before placing
- Survival — resource management and problem solving under constraint
- Challenges — timed and specification-based builds
- Redstone — circuit logic, gates, automation
- Adventures — designing custom worlds for other people to play
What students actually learn
- Logic and sequencing through Redstone circuitry
- Planning a build before starting it, and revising when it does not work
- Collaborative building — agreeing a plan and sticking to it
- Command blocks and basic automation
A brief, as students receive it
Build a door that opens only when two separate switches are on, and closes by itself after five seconds. You may not stand there and close it yourself.
We give the requirements, not the steps. Working out how is the lesson — and the reason students can explain what they built when they get home.
The question parents actually ask
“Why would I pay for a game they already play at home?”
Because what happens here is not the game. At home they build what they feel like. Here they get a specification they did not choose, a constraint they cannot argue with, and an instructor who asks them to explain why their circuit works. The game is the doorway; the logic is the room.
Where it leads
Minecraft students very often move into Roblox or Robotics — the Redstone habits transfer to both surprisingly well.
Questions
Do we need to own Minecraft?
No. Accounts and machines are provided in the center. If your child has their own world they want to bring, that is welcome but never required.
Is this Java or Bedrock?
We teach Redstone and command-block logic that transfers across both. Advanced students working on custom adventures use Java.
When does the term run?
The Fall 2026 Term runs Sep 28, 2026 to Dec 7, 2026 — 10 sessions, one hour a week, at 73 Central Street, Wellesley.
What does it cost?
$395 for the ten-week term. A second club in the same term is $325. Materials are included.
How is a club different from the Belt Program?
A club is one hour a week for ten weeks, in a larger group, focused on one topic. The Belt Program is two hours a week across a ten-month year, in a group of about six, with a written progress report every month and a capstone project. Plenty of students do both.
What if we need to miss a week?
Tell us in advance and we will place your child in another group that week where the schedule allows. Vacation weeks are already excluded from the term dates above.
